WhiteWings' Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short

Harlingen, TX - Down 8-2 after eight innings, the Harlingen WhiteWings (19-54) batted around in the ninth and scored five runs, but fell short in an 8-7 loss to the Alexandria Aces (46-28) tonight at Harlingen Field.

Joel Gonzalez led off the ninth with his fourth home run of the season. Greg Sillivent followed with a single to knock out starter Chad Linder (5-3). Wayne Hedden came on and gave up a single to Matt Lawman, a two-run double to David Fowler and walked Amadeo Zazuetea on four pitches. Juan Carlos Ovalles entered the game and gave up an RBI-ground out to Ryan Fox. One out later, Carl Johnson hit a RBI-ground-rule double. That brought up Trey Hendricks as the winning run at the plate, but he grounded out to end the game.

Ovalles picked up his tenth save.

The Aces struck against Armando Casas (0-2) in the first. Bryan Sabatella and Luis Guance led off with walks. Selwyn Langaigne grounded into a fielder's choice, erasing Sabatella. Brian Nichols followed by reaching on a fielder's choice, erasing Langaigne and moving Guance to third. Guance scored on a wild pitch which also moved Nichols to second. After Rafael Ozuna walked, Andre Marshall hit an RBI-single to make it 2-0.

Langaigne led off the third with a walk. After a Nichols single, Ozuna hit an RBI-single. Marshall followed with an RBI-single and Larry Bethea hit a three-run home run to knock out Ozuna with the score 7-0 Aces.

The WhiteWings got on the board against Linder in the fourth. Fowler led off with a walk and Zazueta followed by reaching on a fielder's choice. Fox followed with his 12th home run of the season to make it 7-2.

Marshall led off the seventh with a home run against Angel Cordero to make it 8-2.

The WhiteWings and Aces play for the final time this season tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Todd Lutz (2-6) will face left-hander Ramon Portillo (7-3). It will be the six of nine-straight free home games to close out the season.
