Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
SAN ANGELO - Mark Willinsky threw eight strong innings and Landon Camp drove in two runs as the San Angelo Colts defeated the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 2-1 Saturday night at Foster Field.
Willinsky was touched for only one unearned run and five hits. Meanwhile Camp drove in Daryl Jones with a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth inning off Luis Chirinos to give the Colts a 1-0 lead, then drove in the winning run against the 22-year-old righthander with a short hop triple that went under the glove of left fielder Ruddy Yan and drove in left fielder Cory Patton.
Chirinos (4-3) threw a complete game eight-inning loss, allowing seven hits and fanning three while walking just one hitter.
The WhiteWings (20-15) tied the score 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Francisco Santana reached on one of four Colts errors, ironically by Willinsky, then stole second base with two outs.
Leugim Barroso then beat out an infield hit, and Santana, running on the crack of the bat, was able to score from second base.
Willinsky (4-1) also fanned six batters and walked one in the 99 degree heat. Fellow righthander Chris Weast collected his first save.
"Our attitude's changed," said Colts manager Doc Edwards. "We've always been a power hitting team, but we're decided we're going to play this way with this team for the next 60 games." The Colts have not hit a home run in their last nine games.
The WhiteWings now travel to Ft. Worth for three games against the Cats, whom they lead by a game in the standings. Rio Grande Valley's next home game will be on Wednesday, July 4 against San Angelo (18-17), with a postgame fireworks show sponsored by The City of Harlingen.
