WhiteWings Lose Battle of Bullpens

HARLINGEN - In a game in which both starting pitchers left in the second inning, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings fell to the San Angelo Colts 9-3 Sunday at Harlingen Field.

The Colts (21-23) struck against Miguel Matos (2-2) in the top of the second. Jason Crosland was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a one-out single by Josh Collazo. One out later, Mike Horn and Butch Ballez hit back-to-back singles to knock out Matos and make it 2-0.

Alex Morales walked the first two WhiteWings (17-25) he faced in the bottom of the second before leaving with an apparent injury. Gorman Romero (4-0) came in and issued a walk to load the bases. Roberto Rodriguez hit an RBI-single to make it 2-1, but Javis Diaz grounded into a 3-2-3 double play and Kevin Griffin struck out to end the inning.

Jason Crosland hit a two-run home run in the top of the third, his league-leading 12th of the season, against Luis Martinez, to make it 4-1.

Yeurys Tejeda led of the bottom of the inning with a double and scored on Arlon Quiroz's league-leading seventh triple. Eric Gonzalez followed with an RBI-groundout to make it 4-3.

That was it against Romero, who struck out seven in six innings of relief.

The Colts put runners at first and second with two outs in the top of the fourth an Ronnie Gaines hit a ground-rule double to make it 5-3. After Martinez intentionally walked Crosland to load the bases, Adam Hale struck out looking to end the inning.

The Colts loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and Ballez hit a sacrifice fly against Freddy Ballestas to make it 6-3.

Crosland struck out leading off the top of the sixth, but reached on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Landon Camp to make it 7-3.

Ballez hit a two-run home run off of Tate Kelly in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring.

The WhiteWings and Colts get Monday off before starting another four-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Foster Field in San Angelo. Right-hander David Cross (1-5) is expected to face right-hander Ezequiel Astacio (3-3).
