San Angelo Colts News Release
Harlingen, TX - Releiver Gorman Romero tossed six innings of relief and shortstop Butch Ballez drove in four runs, as the Colts earned a split of their series with the Rio Grande White Wings by way of a 9-3 win on Sunday night at Harlingen Field.
San Angelo began the scoring in the second as they pieced together three hits to score two runs off of Rio Grande Valley starter Miguel Matos. First baseman Josh Collazo continued his hot-hitting with an RBI single, while shortstop Butch Ballez singled in another run to give the Colts an early 2-0 lead and chase Matos from the game.
Rio Grande Valley came right back however, in the bottom-half by scoring on a RBI single by second baseman Roberto Rodriguez. In the same inning, Colts starter Alex Morales had to leave the game with an undisclosed injury and turn things over to Gorman Romero and the Colts' bullpen.
In the third the Colts plated two runs against former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Luis Martinez as designated hitter Jason Crosland (12) blasted a two-run shot over the left field wall to give the Colts a 4-1 lead.
But back came the White Wings in the bottom of the third as right fielder Arlon Quiroz tripled in a run, then scored on a groundout by third baseman Eric Gonzalez to make it a 4-3 ballgame.
San Angelo would add another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Gaines to take a two-run lead. They then extended it to three on a sac fly by Ballez in the fifth to make the score 6-3. San Angelo would add another run in the sixth on a RBI single by Landon Camp to stretch the lead to four.
Meanwhile, reliever Gorman Romero settled down after a difficult start and proceed to toss six innings of relief while allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. He retired 14 of the final 16 men he faced.
The Colts would get two more runs in the ninth on a two-run homerun by Ballez (4) to give the Colts the final score of 9-3. Ballez led the way offensively by going 2-3 with a single, homerun, sac fly, and four RBI. Collazo wrapped up a tremendous series by going 3-5 with three singles, an RBI and two runs scored. For the four-game set, he went 8-16 with a homer and six RBI. Shortstop Yeurys Tejeda went 2-4 with a run and two doubles to lead the White Wings' attack.
Romero (4-0) got the win for San Angelo, while Matos (2-2) took the loss for Rio Grande.
