The Game

The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings face the San Angelo Colts in game one of a four-game series tonight at 7:05 at Harlingen Field. Right-hander Sendy Vasquez (1-3) will face left-hander Drew Coffey (2-1).

The WhiteWings

The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings have a chance to be in a third place tied at the end of the day if they win and Edinburg (@ Laredo) and Coastal Bend vs Amarillo) lose. The WhiteWings have been in fifth place since July 11.

Brian Nichols is up to eighth in the league in hitting at .339 with five home runs and 27 RBI. Nichols is hitting .341 with four home runs and 20 RBI in 20 games since joining the team.

Scouting the Colts

The San Angelo Colts boast a pitching staff that includes former Houston-Astros starter Ezequiel Astacio and three starters in the top-10 in ERA. Astacio pitched for the Astros in 2005 and 2005, going 5-6 with a 6.02 ERA. In 86.2 innings, he allowed 107 hits and 31 walks while striking out 72. He spent most of the season with Astros in 2005, when he went 3-6 with a 5.67 ERA in 22 games (14 starts). He made the post-season roster and pitched one perfect inning while striking out two in game one of the NLCS (5-3 loss to the Cardinals). Astacio was the losing pitcher in the 7-5 14-inning loss to the Chicago White Sox in game three of the World Series.

Brian Henschel leads the staff at 4-3 with a 2.48 ERA (2nd) and 32 strikeouts compared to just six walks. Chandler Barnard is 7-0 with a 3.26 ERA (6th) with 26 strikeouts compared to 11 walks. Drew Coffey is 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA (3rd)

Offensively, Jason Landreth is hitting .359 (4th in ULB) with 10 home runs (T-1st) and 39 RBI (2nd). He is also tied for second in on-base percentage (.491), third in slugging percentage (.648) and tied for second in extra-base hits (17).

Jason Diaz has 16 stolen bases (T-1st) and is fifth in on-base percentage (.445) while Hunter Jobes is tied for the league lead with 11 doubles. Bryan Frichter, the league's hitting leader at .440, is out with a broken nose.
