Late runs send Colts past WhiteWings

Harlingen - The San Angelo Colts scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before adding three in the ninth to beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 6-2 tonight at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings (16-21) got on the board against Drew Coffey with two outs in the first. Jonathan Poterson singled and Brian Nichols hit a single, moving Poterson to third. He then scored when Hunter Jobes misplayed the ball in centerfield, making it 1-0.

The Colts (26-11) tied it against against Sendy Vasquez in the fifth. Hank Lanto drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Butch Ballez.

That was it against Vasquez, who scattered six hits and one walk over five innings while striking out one.

The WhiteWings took the lead back in the bottom of the inning. Agustin Septimo and Denys Lantigua led off with singles, moving Septimo to third, from where he scored when Poterson grounded into a fielder's choice.

The Colts tied the game again in the top of the sixth against Juan Diaz (4-3), who threw eight of his first nine pitches outside of the strike zone while walking Jason Landreth and Jobes. Two outs later, Lanto hit an RBI-single.

The Colts took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh. With one out, Jason Diaz tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Frichter.

Brett Lester (2-2) struck out four in two perfect innings of relief for the win.

The Colts completed the scoring in the ninth. With one out, Ronnie Gaines walked and Jason Diaz singled. Bryan Frichter followed with a single to center that was misplayed by Casey Allen, allowing Gaines and Diaz to score while Frichter moved to third, allowing him to score on a Landreth sacrifice fly.

The WhiteWings and Colts play game two of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Juan Peralta (0-2) is expected to face left-hander Chandler Barnard (7-0). Gates open at 6:05.
