
Colts Begin Road Series With a Win

San Angelo, Texas--- The san Angelo Colts (26-11) broke the streak of dropping game 1 of a road series as they defeated the Rio Grande valley Whitewings (16-21) with a score of 6-2. San Angelo began the season 0-3 in the opener on the road. That streak was snapped on Saturday night as the Colts pushed across three runs in the ninth cruising to their 26th win of the year.
In the bottom of the first, Jonathan Poterson stood at first base after a single. Whitewings cleanup hitter Brian Nichols lifted a shallow fly ball to left centerfield. As Poterson rounded second and headed to third, Jobes misplayed the ball and Nichols advanced to second. As Jobes attempted to throw out Nichols at second base, Poterson tried for home. Jason Diaz throw from second was late; both runners were safe as the Whitewings took a 1-0 lead.
San Angelo continued to be shutout until the top of the fifth inning. With one out in the frame, Hank Lanto singled. He then advanced on a wild pitch. Butch Ballez doubled down the left field line scoring Lanto and knotting the game at one.
Rio Grande Valley took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning. Agustin Septimo began the inning with a single. Denys Lantigua followed suit with a single moving Septimo to third. Jonathan Poterson then grounded out to second scoring Septimos as the Whitewings went back up by a run.
The Colts run production would not be stopped in the sixth and the seventh inning. After back to back walks to Hunter Jobes and Jason Landreth to begin the sixth, Hank Lanto singled to right field with two outs scoring Landreth and tying the game at one. Then in the seventh, Jason Diaz tripled down the left field line. A long drive to the left center warning track by Bryan Frichter was deep enough to score Diaz on a sacrifice fly.
The top of the ninth inning began with the Colts still leading 3-2. With one out in the inning, Ronnie Gaines walked and Diaz singled. Bryan Frichter sent a line drive single into center field, the center fielder Casey Allen allowed the ball to get past him,he was charged with an error, both Gaines and Diaz scored, making it a 5-2 contest as Frichter cruised into third base. Jason Landreth connected on a deep fly ball to right center field scoring Frichter as the Colts went on to win 6-2.
The winning pitcher in tonight's ballgame was Brett Lester (2-2) who worked a stellar sixth and seventh inning. The right hander did not allow a single run, or hit, while striking out four. Colts starting pitcher Drew Coffey ( 2-1) earned a no decision completing five innings, scattering six hits and allowing just a single earned run. Tom Martin made his first appearance of the season working a three up, three down eighth inning. The losing pitcher was Juan Diaz (4-3).
San Angelo's offense collected 12 hits, scoring six runs. Jason Diaz had his first triple of the season, grabbing four hits including two runs scored. Jason Landreth had two infield singles adding an RBI, a run scored, and a sacrifice fly. Butch Ballez doubled and single, while collecting an RBI.
