Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings came up short in their attempt to become the first team to sweep the San Angelo Colts this season, settling for three-out-of four instead, after a 4-3 loss tonight at Harlingen Field.
The Colts (39-21) struck against Carlos Artiles (2-3) in the third. Butch Ballez drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a groundout. Ronnie Gaines followed with an RBI-single. Jason Landreth reached on an error and a walk to Aaron Cone loaded the bases. One out later, Nick Mahin hit a two-run double to make it 3-0.
The WhiteWings (28-32) responded against Ezequiel Astacio (7-1) in the fourth. Brian Nichols led off with a double and moved to third when the ball was bobbled in right field. Juan Melo followed with an RBI-groundout to make it 3-1.
In the top of the sixth, Hunter Jobes laid down a one-out bunt that was dropped by Artiles for an error. A wild pitch moved Jobes to second, who then stole third and scored on a single by Travis Calloway to make it 4-1.
In the bottom of the inning, Nichols hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a groundout. Welinson Baez followed with a single to move Nichols to third. Alberto Cruz hit an RBI-double and Juan Cabrera hit an RBI-groundout to make it 4-3.
Jameson Maj pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings for his third save.
The WhiteWings welcome the Edinburg Roadrunners to Harlingen Field for game one of a four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Reymond Cruz (5-4) is expected to face left-hander Pedro Flores (4-3). Gates open at 6:05.
The WhiteWings will host a youth clinic before the game, giving kids a chance to learn how to play baseball from the pros for free at 5:00. Gates open at 4:45. All children who participate will receive a free general admission ticket for that night's game.
