Winning Streak Goes To Nine As Roadrunners Sweep Broncos

EDINBURG, TEXAS ---- Eric Montoya struck out eight batters in seven innings to help the Edinburg Roadrunners defeat the Laredo Broncos 6-3 Tuesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The win extends Edinburg's win streak to nine games.

Montoya (5-1) allowed two runs while scattering five hits for his third straight win.

The Broncos (21-39) started the game with three singles by Luis Ugueto, Derek Beckman, and Mario Mendez to load the bases and Argelis Nunez hit into a double-play that allowed Ugueto to score giving Laredo a 1-0 lead.

Osiel Flores led off the bottom of the third with a walk, Nick Aranda followed with an infield single and Wilmer Pino then moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Robert Matlock singled to center to drive in Flores and Aranda giving the Roadrunners the 2- 1 advantage.

Nunez hit his 12th home run of the season in the top of the fourth to tie things up at two.

The Roadrunners (33-27) responded in the bottom half of the fourth inning with Vincent Blue leading off with a walk and coming in to score on an RBI double by Flores to give Edinburg the 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh Wilmer Pino singled to left then moved to second on a walk to Matlock. After a double steal, Hereaud hit a two-run single to left field that drove in Pino and Matlock from second and third. Hunter Owen then walked putting runners at first and second for Blue who singled to center and drove in Hereaud extending the Roadrunners lead to 6-2.

The Broncos scored another run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Alejandro Martinez which made it a 6-3 game.

Kelly Casares pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save of the season to end the game and to complete the sweep of the Broncos.

The Roadrunners travel to Harlingen for a four-game series with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings starting Wednesday night at Harlingen Field. Pedro Flores (4-3) is expected to face Reymond Cruz (5-4) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
