Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
EDINBURG - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings are now losers of five-straight after falling 9-3 to the McAllen Thunder Wednesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Thunder (11-10) jumped on Eric Blackwell (2-1) right away. One out after Wilson Batista drew a leadoff walk, Yaibel Tamayo hit his third home run of the season. Mike Goss and Yordanys Perez followed with singles. One out later, Adam Matos struck out, but catcher Gabriel Ortiz, signed before the game, dropped the ball and threw it away, allowing a run to score. Zach Mandelblatt and Derek Marshall drew back-to-back walks to force-in a run and make it 4-0.
The WhiteWings (12-9) responded in the third against Rashad Ford (1-0). With one out, Antonio DeJesus doubled and Leivi Ventura walked. David Peralta and Edgar Trejo followed with RBI-singles to make it 4-2.
That was it against Ford, who struck out eight in five and two-thirds innings.
DeJesus finished 3-for-5.
Mandelblatt grounded into an RBI-fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning to put the Thunder up 5-2.
The Thunder tacked on a run in the fifth when Mandelblatt scored from third on an error.
The WhiteWings got one back in the top of the seventh when Leivi Ventura hit an RBI-single, but with the tying run at the plate and one out, Robert Roth came in and struck out Trejo and Wesley Dimitt.
Ventura finished 2-for-2 with three walks.
The Thunder got that run right back. Perez led off with a six-pitch walk against Elvis Hernandez. Perez stole second, moved to third when the throw went into centerfield and then scored when the ensuing throw to third got away.
DJ Dixon hit an RBI-triple and scored on a single by Tamayo to put the game out of reach.
The WhiteWings and Thunder play game two of this four-game series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Luis Chirinos (1-0, 0.00) is expected to face right-hander Kurt Houck (2-1, 3.91).
