19 Hits Not Enough

Stranding 12 runners on base the Calgary Vipers (10-9) were defeated 8-7 by the Lake County Fielders (13-6) at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers collected 19 hits in the game and to go along with the runners left on base they also had two players gunned down at the plate and another thrown out at third base. Calgary also led the game on three separate occasions with 3-1, 4-3, and 6-5 in the first six innings of the contest before Lake County went ahead for good with a three-run seventh frame including two unearned runs.

Zac Cline (2-0) recorded the win for Lake County despite allowing six runs on 15 hits while Chris Thompson (5) collected the save after allowing a run an inning of work. Edward Valdez (0-1) took the loss for Calgary by allowing one earned run and three in total in his inning of work. Also out of the bullpen Canadian Shawn Hetherington and Scott Watson were once again solid with two scoreless innings each.

At the plate Jimmy Rohan led the way with a perfect five-for-five day including two triples and one double.

Lake County scored in the top of the first inning when Quentin Luquette double, Rex Rundgren bunted for a base hit, and Luquette scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 advantage.

Calgary quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first as Jonny Kaplan double and scored on a Andy Jenkins run batted in single.

The Vipers went in front 3-1 in the second frame when Louie Templeton singled, Jimmy Rohan tripled for a RBI, Dusty Gober walked, and Wilver Perez drove in a run with a base hit.

The Fielders responded in the next half inning as with two outs Rundgren walked, Argelis Nunez doubled for a RBI, and C.J. Ziegler singled to tie the game at 3-3.

Drew Miller hit his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the third to put the Snakes back in front at 4-3.

Lake County jumped back in front in the fourth as Patrick Brooks singled, with two outs pitcher Zac Cline walked, and Luquette collected a two-run double for a 5-4 advantage.

Calgary responded in the bottom of the inning when Kaplan doubled, Perez singled in a run, and Jenkins doubled in one for a 6-5 lead.

After two scoreless innings the Fielder's took back the lead in the seventh as Rundgren doubled, Ziegler singled in a run, with two outs Brad Payne reached on a fielding error, and Brooks drove in two with a base hit for a 8-6 advantage.

The Vipers cut the lead to one in the ninth inning as Rohan tripled and scored on a Bryan Burke sacrifice fly for a 8-7 final.

Calgary continues this four game series against Kevin Costner's first place Lake County Fielders at Foothills Stadium on Thursday June 16th at 6:30 and on Friday June 17th at 6:30 for Aboriginal Night with 50% off regular admission with Metis or CIS card.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
