Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN- Leivi Ventura hit his team leading sixth home run and Luis Noel overcame a rough start to enable the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to score 10 unanswered runs to beat the McAllen Thunder, 11-6, Friday night at Harlingen Field.

McAllen (29-51) scored four unearned runs in the first inning and two more in the second to lead 6-1 after an inning and a half off Noel (8-2).

But the WhiteWings (46-33) rallied for four runs in the bottom of the frame off starter Frank James, highlighted by Ventura's 2-run home run off the roof of the left field clubhouse.

The WhiteWings tied the game in the bottom of the third when Bryan Marquez greeted reliever Scott Sobczak with an infield single to drive in Welinson Baez, then added three unearned runs off Sobczak (1-1) in the fourth off tallies from Roberto Rodriguez, who made three errors at shortstop in the first two innings before moving to second base, Ventura, and Alex Ruiz.

Meanwhile, Noel didn't allow more than four hitters to come up in his last five innings on the hill. He experimented with a nasty submarine delivery at times to allow only three hits during that time, finishing with nine hits allowed in 6 2/3 innings, one walk, eight strikeouts and no earned runs.

"I stayed positive. I knew we'd stay in the game," said Noel.

Wander Perez retired all seven men he faced in relief to earn his third save of the season.

The victory allowed the WhiteWings to win the series three games to one and take six of eight on their homestand. Their magic number to clinch a playoff berth is four.

Rio Grande Valley now travels to Fort Worth tomorrow to begin an eight game road trip at 7:05 p.m.

CORRECTION- The WhiteWings' record for pitching victories in a season is 14 by Yfrain Linares by 2000. Earlier reports from the club had the record being 11.
