Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - Brian Nichols hit a walk-off RBI-single to send the Harlingen WhiteWings (16-30) to a 5-4 victory over the Amarillo Dillas (27-18) in 11 innings tonight at Harlingen Field.
In his fifth inning of relief work, Josh Smith (1-4) gave up a leadoff single to Terry Roblez in the 11th. After a Candelario Perez walk, Amadeo Zazueta tried to put down a sacrifice bunt, but Roblez was thrown out at third. One out later, Kevin Griffin walked and Nichols followed with the single to end the game.
That made a winner of Brandon Kling (2-0), who pitched a scoreless top of the 11th.
Jesse Rodriguez retired the first six WhiteWings he faced, but in the third, Roblez and Perez led off with singles to set up an RBI-double by Zazueta, making it 1-0.
Alex Gett faced the minimum ten hitters through the first three and one-third innings before allowing an infield single to Keith Brachold. One out later, Danny Bravo walked and A.J. Johnson hit a three-run home run to make it 3-1.
The WhiteWings turned the tables in the fifth. With one out, Perez reached on an infield single. Zazueta followed with an RBI-triple. David Fowler was hit by a pitch. Griffin hit a grounder to the mound. Rodriguez threw high to first base, pulling Johnson off the bag, allowing Griffin to be safe as Zazueta scored and Fowler moved to second. With Nichols batting, Fowler stole third. On the next pitch, Griffin stole second and the throw hit off of Bravo's glove and went into centerfield, allowing Fowler to score, making it 4-3 WhiteWings.
The Dillas tied the game in the eighth against Brian Daly. With one out, Jonathan Renyoso was hit by a pitch, Brachold walked and Gary Schneidmiller hit an RBI-single to make it 4-4.
The WhiteWings and Dillas play game two of this three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Jorge Lugo (3-2) will face left-hander Ronald Lowe (2-0).
