Broncos Defense Struggles in 7-5 Loss to Coyotes

Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos committed 4 errors as they lost to the Edinburg Coyotes by the score of 7-5 on Sunday night in Laredo at Veterans Field.. The Broncos continue their 6 game home stand, against the Edinburg Coyotes on Monday night. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).

The Coyotes got on the scoreboard first in the top of the 1st inning. Eric Gonzalez led off the inning being hit by the pitch. Gary Roche then hit a ground ball to Ben Tinius at 3rd who threw to Matt Lawman covering 2nd, but Lawman couldn't catch the ball, and allowing Gonzalez to go to 3rd. Robert Matlock would then reach base on a fielder's choice with Gonzalez scoring. Daryl Jones then singled putting runners on the corner. Mayobanex Santana would follow with a ground out that scored Matlock and moved Jones to 2nd. Amado German would then single scoring Jones and giving Edinburg a 3-0 lead.

The Broncos would also get on the scoreboard in their half of the 1st. Steven Wright and Matt Lawman hit back to back infield singles. Dwayne White then hit a single scoring Wright. Lawman would go to 3rd on an error by the right fielder Amado German. Edgard Clemente then grounded into a double play, but Lawman scored making the score 3-2.

The Coyotes would score again in the top of the 2nd. Broncos starter Richard Bartlett walked the first two men he faced in Alex Entrekin and Angelo Fermin. Eric Gonzalez would then hit into a fielders choice, which would advance Entrekin to 3rd and force out Fermin at 2nd. Gary Roche then singled scoring Entrekin and moving Gonzalez to 2nd. Robert Matlock would then line out to Eric Padilla who would then step on 2nd to catch Gonzalez off the bag to end the inning, but extending Edinburg's lead to 4-2.

The Broncos would get closer in the bottom of the 3rd. Steven Wright led off the inning with a single. Then Matt Lawman singled moving Wright to 3rd. Dwayne White would then single in Wright. That would make Laredo trail by 1, 4-3.

Edinburg would get that run back in the top of the 4th. With 2 outs, Gary Roche singled, and stole 2nd base. Then Robert Matlock would single scoring Roche for 2nd and making the score 5-3.

Laredo would score again in the bottom of the 4th inning. Ben Tinius led off with a double and went to 3rd on a groundout by Anthony Bennett. Then Mark Perez walked. Eric Padilla would then hit into a fielder's choice. Scoring on the play was Tinius and Perez was forced out at 2nd. That would make the score 5-4.

The Coyotes would strike back in the top of the 6th inning. With Amado German on 2nd with 1 out, Logan Wood doubled scoring German on the play and giving the Coyotes a 6-4 lead.

Richard Bartlett the starter for the Broncos would be done after 5 innings of work. He gave up 6 runs 3 of which were earned on 9 hits. He walked 3 batters and struck out 4. Dan Sausville came into the game in relief.

The Broncos would get closer again in the bottom of the 6th when Luany Sanchez led off with a solo home run, his 10th of the season. That would make the score 6-5.

Eric Montoya would leave the game for Edinburg after pitching 6 innings and Toro Trevino would come into the game in the 7th inning. Sausville would then leave the game for the Broncos after 2 innings of good work for Rusty Jones. Jones would get the first two men out in the inning before Daryl Jones reached base on an error by Eric Padilla. After Jones stole 2nd, Mayobanex Santana doubled scoring the run and giving the Coyotes a 7-5 lead.

Luke Prihoda would come into the game for the Coyotes in the 8th inning. He would give up a leadoff double to Ben Tinius. But he would rebound to retire the next 3 hitters keeping the score 7-5.

David Wasylak would then come into the game for the Broncos in the top of the 9th. He would pitch a 1-2-3 inning to have the Broncos trailing by 2 going into the bottom of the 9th. Laredo would have to try to comeback against the closer of the Coyotes Julio Castro.

Castro would get the Broncos to go 1-2-3 to end the inning, as Laredo dropped the 1st game of the series by a score of 7-5

The Broncos scored 5 runs on 13 hits and committed 4 errors, while the Coyotes scored 7 runs on 12 hits and committed 2 errors.

The Broncos fall to 22-24 on the season. The Broncos will be back in action on Monday night when they play game 2 of a 3 game set against the Edinburg Coyotes at Veterans Field at 7:35.
