Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

FORT WORTH- Celson Polanco threw seven shutout innings to earn his 11th victory of the season en route to a 5-3 Rio Grande Valley victory against Fort Worth Wednesday night at LaGrave Field.

Playing on a scheduled off day after a Tuesday rainout, Polanco (11-4) held the Cats to six hits and struck out seven batters while not walking a single hitter. In 35 1/3 innings against Fort Worth this season, Polanco has walked only one hitter.

He also has the second highest victory total in a single season in WhiteWings history, tying Joe Rodgers and Ryan Whitaker, who won 11 games in 2007 and 1997, respectively.

Rio Grande Valley (48-35), who were assured of not having a losing record this season with the victory scored five runs on six hits in a 10-batter top of the second off Casey Russell (1-3). Fort Worth (47-37) scored two runs in the eighth and catcher Derek Marshall drove in another in the ninth with a double, but Nick Lenzendorf was able to retire the last three hitters of the game with Marshall on second base to earn his 11th save of the year.

The WhiteWings, who clinched a playoff berth on Tuesday by virtue of Abilene's 8-4 loss to San Angelo, now travel to San Angelo to play the Colts in a four game series beginning tonight at 7:05 p.m.
