Cats Rally Not Enough in Loss to WhiteWings

August 22, 2012 - North American League (NAmL)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

Fort Worth catcher Derek Marshall attempted to keep a late-inning rally going with a RBI double in the ninth inning of the Cats' 5-3 loss to Rio Grande Valley but the WhiteWings held Marshall and the Cats off. Marshall hit 2-for-4 in Wednesday's game.

The WhiteWings scored all five of their runs in the second inning off of Fort Worth starter Casey Russell who pitched six innings and allowed five runs (three of them earned) on ten hits with two strikeouts. Russell allowed six of his ten hits just in the second inning.

Rio Grande starter Celson Polanco had no trouble keeping Fort Worth off the board in his seven innings of work, only giving up six hits and striking out seven Cats' batters. Nick Lenzendorf, normally a first baseman for the WhiteWings, picked up the save on Wednesday and is 3-1 on the season with 11 saves and a 1.85 ERA.

With the win, Rio Grande extends their lead over the Cats in the United League standings to two games with 12 games left in the regular season.

The WhiteWings will travel to San Angelo to play a four game series with the Colts that starts Thursday night at 7:05 at Foster Field. The Cats will hit the road to Abilene to play two games of a four game home-and-home series with the Prairie Dogs that starts Thursday at 7:05 at Walt Driggers Field.

The Cats' next home game will be on Saturday, where they will honor local police and firefighters all evening. A pregame softball match between the firefighters and police will take place before the game, and all tickets for family and friends are just five dollars. Tickets can be purchased online at FWCats.com or by phone at (817) 332-CATS.
