Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - The Harlingen WhiteWings (3-5) sent ten men to the plate in the first, scoring seven runs against Bric Steed (0-1) and never looking back in a 16-3 win over the Edinburg Coyotes (5-3) today at Harlingen Field.
Bub Bergstrom got things going by getting by a pitch. David Fowler followed with a single and Miguel Peguero walked. That set-up Ryan Fox's first home run of the year, a grand slam. One out later, Kevin Griffin doubled. One out after that, Argelis Nunez hit an RBI-single and Candelario Perez hit his first-career home run to make it 7-0.
The second was no kinder to Steed as the Fowler and Peguero led off with singles and moved up a base each on a wild pitch. Ryan Fox hit a sacrifice fly to score Fowler. Peguero then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Nichols sacrifice fly, making it 9-0.
That was more than Dan Valentin (1-0) would need as he went six innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six and not walking anybody.
The only damage against Valentin was a Jason Arrowood solo-home run in ths fifth and a Daryl Jones two-run shot in the sixth.
The WhiteWings got six more runs in the fifth. Griffin and Terry Roblez led off with singles against Steed and Nunez followed with an RBI-double. Perez struck out on a wild pitch, allowing him to reach base and Roblez to score. Bergstrom followed with an RBI-double to finally knock out Steed. Bryan Heaston came in and gave up a three-run home run to Fowler to make it 15-3.
Nichols added a solo home run in the eighth against John Maschino to complete the scoring.
The WhiteWings and Edinburg Coyotes complete the three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. James Beever (0-1) is expected to face Miliade Venas (0-1).
