San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - In the San Angelo Colts' home opener on Tuesday night, they turned the first triple play in team history. In their second home game on Wednesday morning, the Colts made more history as 4,627 fans, mostly children, packed Foster Field, setting a new Colts single-game attendance record. However, the Colts' late-inning comeback fell short against the Laredo Broncos, losing 11-9 to even the series at one game apiece heading into the series finale on Thursday night.
John Anderson, who was 3-for-5 with six RBIs, gave San Angelo a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-run single off Laredo starter Gregorio Martinez, who picked up the win to improve to 1-0. Martinez lasted six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Brian Henschel (0-2) started for the Colts and surrendered a two-run single in the third to Jose Salas, tying the game at 2-2. Both runs were unearned though, because of an error by third baseman Jason Crosland, who committed two of the four errors charged to San Angelo on the day. Laredo also committed four errors.
The Broncos broke the game open with a six-run fourth off Henschel, who took the loss after giving up eight runs, five earned, on nine hits in four innings. Mark Lewis drove in the first run of the frame with a fielder's choice and Dwayne White and Luany Sanchez then followed with RBI singles. Edgard Clemente provided the big blow with a three-run homer to left field, his second of the year, to make it 8-2.
San Angelo battled back to make it 8-4 in the sixth as Tyrone Pendergrass brought home a run with a groundout and Anderson drove in a run with a double off Martinez. In the seventh, reliever Rusty Jones gave up a solo homer to Benny Craig, who hit his first of the year to make it 8-5.
Laredo regained a six-run lead in the eighth as reliever Taylor Fleming surrendered a two-run double to Sanchez and an RBI single to Clemente to give the Broncos an 11-5 advantage. The Colts nearly came back in the ninth though, as Andres Rodriguez crushed the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for his third dinger of the young season. Later in the inning, Nathan Crawford gave up another long ball, this time a three-run shot to right field by Anderson to make it 11-9. Bryan Frichter, who improved his hitting streak to eight games, then singled with two out to bring the tying run to the plate but Dan Sausville induced Crosland to ground out to end the game. Sausville picked up a save in his debut with the Broncos after signing with the team just before the series began.
