Whitenack joins Tennessee from Daytona; Sommer Released

KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Double-A minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce this morning RHP Robert Whitenack has been added to the team's active roster in advance of the Smokies' series finale with the Jacksonville Suns. In a related roster move, LHP Luke Sommer has been given his outright release from the Cubs organization. Whitenack will be available for today's 1:05 p.m. game in Jacksonville, Fla.

Whitenack will join the Smokies for the first time in his career. In four starts in High-A Daytona, he was 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA. He allowed only five runs (three earned), with one walk, while striking out 25 in 23.0 innings of work. The North Massapequa, NY native was selected by the Cubs in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Sommer spent five seasons with the Cubs organization. He was drafted by the Cubs in the 30th round in 2007 as an outfielder; then converted to a pitcher prior to the 2008 season. In 2011, Sommer was 0-0 with one save, with an 8.10 ERA in 10.0 innings of work.
