Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Led by a pair of goals from Matt Whitehead and Todd Hosmer, the Mississippi RiverKings (3-2-0) survived a late push from the Peoria Rivermen (2-3-1) to take game one of the weekend set 4-3 in overtime.

The RiverKings did not wait long to strike. Matt Whitehead found the back of the net just 1:55 into the action to give the RiverKings a 1-0 lead in the first period. But Peoria struck back at the end of the period. With Matt Whitehead serving a too-man-men-on-the-ice penalty, Tyler Amburgey ripped a shot past Matt Krahn to tie the game at one heading into the first intermission.

In the second period, the RiverKings jumped out on to. Todd Hosmer picked up his first goal of the game from Matt Whitehead and Daniel Sobotka to send the home team to the locker room up by two.

The third period saw the RiverKings extend their lead. Hosmer collected his second of the night at the 7:52 mark from Whitehead to extend their lead to two.

Peoria fought back late in the game. Nick Wheeler's shot found the back of the net from Joe Schiller and Garrett Vermeersch to cut the RiverKings lead to one with just over three minutes remaining. But with 81 seconds left in regulation, Adam Hartley's backhand beat Krahn to send the game to overtime, tied 3-3.

The two teams traded chances in overtime, but Matt Whitehead's slap shot from the top of the face off circle rang off both posts and found the back of the net to give the RiverKings the 4-3 win.

Matt Krahn (2-0-0) took the win after stopping 19 of 22 shots against. Eric Levine (0-1-1) stopped 29 of 33 shots against in the loss.

The RiverKings and Rivermen will battle again tomorrow night at 3:05 p.m. at the Landers Center in Southaven. Tickets are still available online at ticketmaster.com or through the Landers Center Box Office.
