Cottonmouths Use Special Teams to Defeat Thunder

BLOOMINGTON - The Bloomington Thunder gave up two power play goals and two shorthanded goals and fell 5-0 to the Columbus Cottonmouths on Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

The Cottonmouths opened the scoring with 6:25 remaining in the first period on a power play goal by Tory Allan that rattled off the right post and into the net. The Snakes scored a shorthanded goal with 4:50 remaining on a rebound goal by Dan Bremner to increase the guests' lead to 2-0. Jason Gray scored another rebound on another power play with 2:32 remaining to give Columbus a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.

Columbus scored a controversial goal with 4:02 left in the second as Dan Bremner crashed the net on a rush, knocking the puck into a careening net, and the Snakes increased the advantage to 5-0 with 2:47 on Chris Bailer's tally on their second shorthanded goal of the game and the final tally of the contest.

The Cottonmouths were 2-for-8 on the power play while the Thunder did not score in 12 power play chances. Max Strang stopped 31 shots in the loss while Travis Bosch earned a 36-save shutout.

The Thunder continue the home stand next Friday and Saturday at 7:05 each evening as the Louisiana IceGators visit U.S. Cellular Coliseum. Juniors win: The Bloomington Junior Blaze bounced back behind a hat trick from Steven Smoltz on a four-point night with a 6-4 win over the Soo Firehawks in Midwest Junior Hockey League play on Saturday evening at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The teams play the rubber game of their series on Sunday at 12 p.m. Central at Big Bear Ice Arena.
