Whitehead Atop Scoring Leaders
February 1, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
Pensacola, FL- Pensacola Ice Flyers veteran and alternate captain Matt Whitehead is currently leading the SPHL in goals -24 goals in 36 games- after putting one between the pipes last night against the Mississippi Surge. Whitehead is tied for overall points with Fayetteville's Chris Leveille.
Since last season, Whitehead has been able to double his number of goals and record 5 additional assists. "I try not to think about who the scoring leaders are. I mean, don't get me wrong I'm really excited to be leading in goals right now but I'm trying to stay focused on what really matters; winning games and eventually winning the President's Cup," Whitehead commented.
The 5-foot-7-inch center has recorded points in 24 matches so far this season. Whitehead was able to earn 3 or more points in 10 of those matches.
"He is an excellent player no doubt about that. Not only does he have a quick shot but he's probably one of the fastest guys in the league." Coach Todd Gordon said. "He's definitely driven to continue improving and he gets after it every day at practice."
Whitehead will have the chance to acquire first in overall points on Thursday, Feb. 3 when the Ice Flyers face the Louisiana IceGators who are currently last in the SPHL.
