Whitecaps big lead squandered in loss to Silver Hawks

COMSTOCK PARK - For the first time this season the Whitecaps scored five runs or more and lost. West Michigan blew a 5-1 lead as South Bend rallied for a 7-6 victory.

Prior to Wednesday, the Whitecaps were 30-0 this season when scoring at least five runs in a single game.

Will Crouch led the offensive attack for South Bend. He was 4-for-5 and twice missed on opportunities to triple and hit for the cycle. The Silver Hawk first baseman scored four times with a home run and two doubles. Crouch crossed the plate with the winning run in the seventh inning on a ground out by Orlando Mercado.

When Crouch scored off Whitecaps reliever Matt Rusch, it ended a streak of 37.1 consecutive scoreless innings pitched by the West Michigan bullpen.

South Bend committed three errors in the first inning to help the Whitecaps grab a 3-0 lead. It was 5-1 in favor of the ‘Caps by the end of the second inning.

However, starting pitcher Burke Badenhop could not hold the lead. The Silver Hawks touched him for two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth.

Reliever Forrest Cory pitched four perfect innings for South Bend beginning in the fifth to set up Kyler Newby, who pitched the ninth and earned his fifth save.

A total of seven errors were committed in the game: Four by South Bend and three by the Whitecaps.

Pedro Cotto went 3-for-5 for West Michigan with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
