Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 28, 2006) "" The Burlington Bees (2-5, 37-37) snapped a streak of 16 straight scoreless innings with a three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels (3-4, 34-43) 3-2 at Community Field tonight. The Bees win two of three in this series, with all three games decided by just one run.

The game started as another pitchers' duel as Bees' starter Michael Penn allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings before coming out with some tenderness in his arm. He was removed for precautionary reasons although it's not expected to be serious. He will be re-evaluated in 24 hours. Yovany Damico took over in the fourth and pitched three scoreless innings before the Kernels started the scoring in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Dallas Morris, Stantrel Smith, and Marco Albano singled to produce a run and leave runners on the corners. With Madison Edwards batting, Albano took off for second and looked like he was going to beat the throw, but stopped and started back to first to get into a rundown. Chris McConnell chased Albano back towards first, but then Miguel Vega dropped his throw allowing Albano to get back to first and Smith to come in and score. Damico struck out Edwards to end the inning, making the second run unearned.

Kernels' starter Stephen Marek kept the Bees off the scoreboard for seven innings, twice getting out of a jam with the bases loaded. In the bottom of the eighth, Josh Johnson led off with a chopper to first that Mark Trumbo fielded, but Marek was late getting to the bag and the flip to first ended up rolling away as Johnson beat the play for an infield single. The Kernels then brought in lefty Brad Beck to face Carlos Arroyo who hit a high chopper towards second with Johnson running on a 3-2 pitch. Larry Infante tried for a bare-handed play, but couldn't come up with it and Arrt and Arroyo was aboard with an infield hit. The Kernels then brought in Tim Didjurgis to face Mario Lisson. Lisson bunted towards a charging Trumbo from first and the ball went off of his glove for an error to load the bases. Lisson was credited with a sacrifice on the play. Miguel Vega then lined a single to left to bring in one run. The Kernels got the first out on a force out at the plate on a bouncing ball to shortstop by Jeff Howell. McConnell hit another chopper to the left side that took a late, high hop off the glove of Hainley Statia at shortstop and rolled into shallow left field. McConnell was credited with a single and 2 RBI on the bad hop as Lisson and Vega raced home to give the Bees a 3-2 lead. Didjurgis got out of the inning with a double play.

Kraig Schambough came in for the top of the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Infante, but retired the next three batters and struck out the last two to earn his seventh save and tie Gilbert De La Vara for the team lead in that department. Cody Harkcom (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth and earned the win. Didjurgis (0-5) was charged with his third blown save and got the loss although the only run charged to him was unearned.

The Bees will start a new series at O'Brien Field in Peoria against the Chiefs tomorrow night at 7:00. RH Rayner Oliveros (3-2, 2.45) will get the start in place of an injured Matt Kniginyzky. All-Star RH Mitch Atkins (6-1, 2.58) will start for the Chiefs. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
