Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA - The Worcester Tornadoes announced that they have sold the contract of Righthanded Pitcher Eddie Pena to the Chicago White Sox organization.

Pena, 24, appeared in 29 games out of the bullpen for the Tornadoes in 2007, posting a 5-3 record and a 5.56 ERA. The submarining righty was especially tough on lefthanded batters, holding them to a stingy .220 batting average. The Georgetown University product will be making his second foray into affiliated baseball. He spent the entire 2006 season pitching at three different levels in the San Diego Padres system, including five games with Triple-A Portland of the Pacific Coast League. Pena has had two stints with Worcester , as he was part of the 2005 Tornadoes Can-Am League championship team, going 2-4, 5.08 in 32 appearances (1 start).

"We are extremely happy for Eddie to get this opportunity with the White Sox," said Tornadoes Manager Rich Gedman. "He has worked extremely hard this offseason, and it's always nice when hard work pays off. The Tornadoes wish him nothing but the best in his quest to realize his dream of pitching in the Major Leagues."

Pena becomes the seventh Can-Am League player to have his contract purchased by an affiliated club since the conclusion of the 2007 season (Tom Atlee -- Milwaukee Brewers, Tony Gonzalez - San Diego Padres, Guillermo Reyes - Arizona Diamondbacks, Olmo Rosario - San Francisco Giants, Steve Palazzolo - San Francisco Giants). The last Tornadoes player to have his contract purchased by an affiliated team was D.J. Mattox (Kansas City Royals) on June 24, 2007. Pena will report to the White Sox minor league complex for Spring Training.
