Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 7, 2013) - Jason Wheeler held Tampa to four hits and one run over seven innings to help the Fort Myers Miracle defeat the Yankees 4-2 on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium.
The Miracle won despite being without top prospects Miguel Sano and Eddie Rosario, who were each given a night off after playing in the first 30 games.
With the new-look lineup, the Miracle found enough offense to back up Wheeler. They loaded the bases in the fourth against Yankees' starter Corey Black and Matt Koch delivered a two-run single. Later in the inning Angel Morales plated Kennys Vargas on a ground out to put Fort Myers ahead 3-0.
Saxon Butler belted a solo home run off of Wheeler in the fifth to make it 3-1, but the Miracle got the run right back in their half of the inning when Vargas lined a single to left field that scored Aderling Mejia.
A 4-1 lead was enough for Wheeler. He pitched around a one-out double by Ben Gamel in the sixth and only needed eight pitches to retire the side in order in the seventh. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.
The Yankees inched closer by scoring a run off of reliever Chad Rodgers in the eighth, but Zack Jones struck out the side ninth for his sixth save of the season to end the ballgame.
The trio of Miracle pitchers combined to strike out the Yankees 10 times. In Monday's game, D.J. Baxendale and Adrian Salcedo combined to strike out 13 Tampa players.
Mejia, in his second game for the Miracle, walked twice and scored twice. He also doubled.
Koch was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and Vargas went 2-4.
Black took the loss for the Yankees. He lasted four inning and gave up three runs and four hits.
The Miracle (25-6) will go for the series victory over the Yankees (13-18) when the teams meet for the fourth time at Hammond Stadium on Wednesday. It is Education Day at Hammond Stadium so first pitch is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. Join Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald for the broadcast on www.miraclebaseball.com beginning at 10:15 a.m.
