Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB.-- The Overtime Shootout drought is finally over for the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Shootout goals byMark StoneandEric RoyFriday night lifted Brandon to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Swift Current Broncos as the Wheat Kings picked up their first Shootout win in over two years.
With the win, the Wheat Kings first shootout victory since January 15th, 2010, Brandon kept pace with both the Regina Pats and Saskatoon Blades as all three teams picked up critical victories Friday night. Brandon is now 33-26-1-3, good for 70 points and remain two points behind seventh place Regina and three back of sixth place Saskatoon in the WHL's Eastern Conference.
The Wheat Kings host the Pats in a critical Eastern Division game Saturday night at Westman Communications Group Place.
After two scoreless periods, the Broncos opened the scoring five minutes into the final period, only to see rookie defencemanAyrton Nikkel even things up just three minutes later. A powerplay goal by Stone with under four minutes to play gave Brandon their first lead of the game, but Swift Current sent the game into overtime whenBrad Hoban scored his second of the night with just over a minute remaining in regulation time.
"For the most part, I think our team did a good job keeping shots to the outside," Brandon goalkeeperCorbin Boes toldBruce Luebke on CKLQ's post-game show. "They got a few chances late there but I guess part of my job is to make some of the saves and give our team a chance to win."
Boes finished the game with 35 saves while the BroncosJon Groenheyde turned aside 38 of 40 Brandon shots.
With his third period goal Friday, Stone ran his league leading point scoring streak to fourteen games. He now has 39 goals and 105 points, one shy of last year's total and one behind the new WHL scoring leaderBrendan Shinniminof the Tri-City Americans.
Winners of eight of their last ten games (8-1-0-1), Brandon is now ten points up on the ninth place Red Deer Rebels who dropped a 4-0 decision to the Prince Albert Raiders.
Tickets to Saturday's game againstJordan Weal and the Pats are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
