Wheaties Welcome Stott, Pats Saturday

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings bring the curtain up on their post-Christmas schedule Saturday night at Westman Communications Group Place against the visiting Regina Pats.

Winners of three straight games, the Wheat Kings have pulled to within a point of second place Swift Current in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division. Brandon is 20-13-1-1 while the 21-15-0-1 Broncos travel to Medicine Hat to meet the Tigers on Saturday.

The Pats meanwhile are 18-15-1-4, good for 41 points and trail Brandon by just a single point. However, the Wheat Kings enjoy three games in hand entering weekend action.

Both teams will be missing key people Saturday. While the Wheat Kings will be without 16-year old rookie Mark Stone and captain Keith Aulie, the Pats enter the game without all stars Jordan Eberle and Colten Teubert as well as forwards Rudolf Cerveny, Jordan Weal and Dominick Favreau.

Aulie, Eberle and Teubert are skating for Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Ottawa while Cerveny is playing for his native country, the Czech Republic.

Weal, Favreau and Stone are attending the World Under 17 Challenge in Port Alberni, B.C. Stone and Favreau are playing together on Team West while Weal is representing the Pats on Team Pacific.

Saturday's game will be the fifth meeting of the season between these two teams. The Wheat Kings are currently 3-1-0 against the Pats.

Following tonight's game, the Wheat Kings will hit the road for a 3-game trip to Alberta, beginning Tuesday night in Lethbridge.

In addition to hosting the Pats tonight, western Manitoba hockey fans will have an opportunity to hear local singing star Amanda Stott perform the national anthem. The 26-year old Stott is home for Christmas this week, after spending three weeks touring with Tom Jackson's "Singing for Supper" tour which benefits the Canadian Association of Food Banks.
