Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- It took some extra time but the Brandon Wheat Kings have grabbed a 2-0 lead in their best of seven Western Hockey League opening round playoff series with the Prince Albert Raiders.
For the second straight game, the Wheat Kings beat the Raiders in overtime, edging Prince Albert 3-2 on Mark Derlago's second goal of the game - 4:59 into overtime - on Saturday night.
Brandon won the series opener on Friday night with a 4-3 overtime victory as 18-year old rookie Daniel Bartek scored twice including the game winner.
The series now shifts to Prince Albert for games three, four and five. Should a sixth game be necessary, it would be played on Tuesday, April 3rd at the Keystone Centre.
Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Wheat Kings took the lead midway through the second on goals by Andrew Clark and Derlago's first of the night - two minutes apart. Prince Albert tied it with less than three minutes to play in the second when Ashton Hewson beat Brandon netminder Tyler Plante.
A former Manitoba AAA Midget League scoring champion, Derlago led the WHL with 46 goals during the regular season.
Lukas Zeliska also scored for the Raiders, who were outshot 50-20, giving the Wheat Kings a 91-40 advantage through the first two games of the series. Needless to say, Prince Albert netminder Jesse Deckert has been sensational in this series.
The Wheat Kings will practice in Brandon for the next couple of days, before travelling to Prince Albert on Tuesday. Game three is scheduled for Wednesday night.
