Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- It will take a second straight "Standing Room Only" crowd to do it, but the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings have a chance Saturday night to establish a new Single Season franchise attendance record.
Entering the final regular season game of the year, the Wheat Kings have attracted a total of 142,933 fans in 35 home games, which translates to an average of 4,084 fans per game.
The hockey club's Single Season record is 148,761, which was set last season when the Wheat Kings captured their fourth Eastern Division pennant in six years. That means 5,829 fans need to turn up on Saturday night for the Wheat Kings to break last year's record.
Wednesday's crowd of 5,904 was the largest of the season and marked the third time this year that the WHL club has attracted a crowd of over five thousand. 5,902 fans were on hand at Westman Place December 12th when the Wheat Kings hosted Kelowna and 5,027 turned out for this year's Home Opener in September against the visiting Saskatoon Blades.
As of 4 p.m. Thursday, 4,128 tickets had been purchased for Saturday night's game, which will feature a special Salute to Tim Bits Hockey and a first intermission game between the Virden Tim Bits Squirts and the Souris Tim Bit Elks.
Fans can purchase tickets to Saturday's game as well as Brandon's first two playoff home games at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
The Wheat Kings enter the final weekend of the regular season - a home and home series with the Regina Pats with a record of 41-24-3-2, good for 87 points and a tie for second place in the Eastern Division with the Swift Current Broncos. While the Wheat Kings take on the Pats, the Broncos will tangle with Moose Jaw. The fourth place Warriors enter the weekend trailing Brandon and Swift Current by just a single point.
In other Wheat King news, a total of $2,500 was raised for the Brandon Humane Society at Wednesday 4-3 Brandon victory over the Prince Albert Raiders. 11-year old Michael Love won the grand prize in the 2nd Annual Pucks 'n Pets Tennis Ball Toss - a 2008-09 Wheat Kings' Season Ticket and a years supply of pet food from Nestle Purina.
