Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Regina, Saskatchewan -- The Brandon Wheat Kings have closed to within three points of the Western Hockey League Eastern Division leading Saskatoon Blades, thanks to back to back victories this weekend.

After opening the weekend with an impressive 5-2 victory over the Raiders in Prince Albert on Friday, the Wheat Kings built up a 6-1 second period lead en route to a 6-4 victory over the Pats in Regina on Saturday.

With the two victories, Brandon improved its record to 20-11-0-2. The Wheat Kings have now won seven of their last eight games to pull to within striking distance of the first place Blades, who dropped a 5-1 decision to the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday.

In Saturday`s win, Brandon got goals from six different players including Mark Stone, Jordan DePape and Alexander Urbom, who each added an assit. Brenden Walker, Aaron Lewadniuk and Matt Calvert also scored for the Wheat Kings, who received a 38 save performance from netminder Andrew Hayes.

Jordan Eberle scored three times in a losing cause for the Pats.

In Friday`s win meanwhile, Lewadniuk scored twice for the Wheat Kings who bounced back from a 2-0 first period deficit with five unanswered goals. Former Seattle Thunderbird goalkeeper Jacob DeSerres turned aside 35-37 shots to pick up the win.

Brandon`s recent streak sets the stage for quite the showdown in Saskatoon on Wednesday as the Wheat Kings will close out a stretch of three straight road games. Following that game, the Wheat Kings will return home for back to back games next weekend against Kelowna and Edmonton on Friday and Saturday nights respectively.

Friday night is the annual Shoppers Mall Teddy Bear Toss, which means fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to the game and when the Wheat Kings hit the scoresheet for the first time against the Rockets, they can litter the ice with them. All stuffed animals collected will be donated to the Local Christmas Cheer Board. Over one thousand were collected last season.

Tickets to both weekend games will go on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office, located in the Keystone Centre`s Viewing Lounge. However, fans can order by phone at 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca on Sunday.
