Wheaties, Blue Cross To Honour Special Olympian

Brandon, Manitoba - A multi medal winner at last summer's Special Olympics World Summer Games in China will be recognized during Wednesday's Western Hockey League game at Westman Communications Group Place between the first place Brandon Wheat Kings and the visiting Kelowna Rockets.

44-year old Arthur Haggstrom, the most recent winner of the Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month Award, came home recently with both a silver and bronze medal in ten pin bowling from the Shanghai Games.

As well, he placed sixth in the individual events, bowling a top game of 131 in the doubles event, which earned him a green participation medal.

"It was tough," Haggstrom described the competition to Brandon Sun reporter Keith Borkowsky last October. "The lanes were a bit different than the ones I'm used to here."

Haggstrom's plaque presentation will be made during the first intermission of Wednesday's game, which will feature one of the WHL's hottest clubs. In addition to winning seven straight games, the 21-9-0-1 Wheat Kings have gone eight games without a loss on home ice.

Tickets to Wednesday's game are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca. Fans attending Wednesday's game are encouraged to bring a non- perishable food item or new, unwrapped toy for the Westman Traditional Christmas Dinner.

Haggstrom becomes the second Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month recipient for the 2007-2008 campaign. This year marks the fourth season that western Manitoba hockey fans have been given the opportunity to visit the Wheat Kings' official web site and nominate coaches, volunteers, athletes and officials for this prestigious award.
