Brandon, Manitoba -- After setting a franchise record for Most Shutouts in a Single Season - six - during his rookie Western Hockey League season last winter, 18-year old netminder Tyler Plante picked up his first "goose egg" of the 2005-06 campaign Wednesday night in Winnipeg as the Wheat Kings blanked the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-0.

A second round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers, Plante turned aside 24 shots in earning his seventh career WHL shutout, moving him into a tie with Byron Penstock for third place on the club's all time list. Only Jamie Hodson and Glen Hanlon, the current coach of the NHL's Washington Capitals collected more during their playing days in Brandon - eight.

Wednesday's win, coupled with Prince Albert's 3-2 loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers, leaves Brandon four points up on the Raiders in the battle for the fourth and final playoff in the WHL's Eastern Division. The Wheat Kings also have a game in hand.

Rookie center Tyler Dittmer, with his ninth and tenth goals of the season, led Brandon offensively Wednesday night. Captain Teegan Moore, Corey Courchene and defenceman Daryl Boyle also scored for the Wheat Kings, who will be hoping to complete a sweep of this week's 2-game series with the Hurricanes on Friday night at the Keystone Centre.

Brandon enters weekend play with a record of 20-25-5-3, including a 13-8-4 mark on home ice where the Wheat Kings have managed to collect at least a point in eight of their last 9 home games.

The Wheat Kings, who are currently in a stretch that will see them play seven of eight games on home ice, will close out their current 5-game WHL home stand Saturday night against the Eastern Division leading Moose Jaw Warriors.
