Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings brought the curtain down on their pre-Christmas schedule Saturday night with a convincing 8-2 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors to complete a sweep of their home and home weekend series sweep.

The Wheat Kings, who beat the Warriors 4-1 in Moose Jaw on Friday night, extended their winning streak to eight and enter the weeklong Christmas break sitting tied atop the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division with the Saskatoon Blades.

The Blades rebounded from Friday's loss in Prince Albert to beat the Raiders 5-2 on Saturday.

20-year old Aaron Lewadniuk and 17-year old Mark Stone both had their first WHL hat tricks as the Wheat Kings won for the 12th time in the past thirteen games.

"Wiebe and Calvert made great plays on all three of the goals and I just had to have my stick on the ice and tap them in," Stone told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ's post-game show. "I like to go to the front of the net and get those easy goals. There's something better than scoring a nice, easy, greasy goal."

Colby Robak and Michael Ferland also scored for the Wheat Kings while Toni Rajala and newly acquired Shayne Wiebe added three assists apiece. For Wiebe, Saturday night's game marked his Wheat King debut at Westman Place.

Quinton Howden scored both goals for Moose Jaw, who trailed 3-0 and 4-1 at the period breaks.

"It's always good to have success," Stone went on to say. "We always want to have W's going into the Christmas break and always a great feeling to know you have momentum and keep it coming with a big second half."

Brandon enters the Christmas break with an impressive 25-11-0-2 record, good for 52 points, which leaves them two points behind Calgary in the battle for top spot in the Eastern Conference.

The win marked another "Smittys Lucky 7 Night" as well over 4,700 fans went home with a free breakfast, courtesy of Brandon's two Smittys Restaurants. Those fans will now have a week to take advantage of a Wheat Kings' 2+2+2 Breakfast, thanks to Brandon's 8-goal outburst on Saturday night.

The Wheat Kings are now idle until December 28th when they travel to Swift Current to meet the Broncos. Brandon's next home game is Saturday, January 2nd when the Prince Albert Raiders come to town.

Tickets to Brandon's upcoming home games - which make a terrific Christmas gift idea - are on sale this week at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
