Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, in association with Koch Fertilizer Canada, will be presenting an unofficial kick-off to the 2018-19 Manitoba minor hockey season Sunday afternoon when the Tri-City Americans pay their first visit to Westoba Place in two years.

In recognition of the new season, Koch Fertilizer has purchased blocks of tickets so that over two dozen teams will have the opportunity to travel to Brandon for the Wheat Kings' traditional Remembrance Day game.

Among the communities that will be represented at the game, which will feature a special pre-game Remembrance Day Ceremonial opening face-off, will be Holland, Wawanesa, Boissevain, Reston, Oak Lake, Carberry, Minnedosa, Hamiota, Kenton, Rivers, Shoal lake, Strathclair, Birtle, Miniota, Glenboro, Deloraine, Killarney, Shilo and Brandon.

Participating Koch retailers include Redfern Farm Services locations throughout western Manitoba, Double Diamond Farm Supply of Boissevain, Shur Gro Farm Services in Shoal Lake and Brandon, Pembina Co-op, Barkers Agri Centre in Melita, Circle T Agra Centre, Twin Valley Co-op and Paterson Crop Inputs in Killarney.

Shilo's Jack Wilson and Daxin Sholdice of Glenboro have been chosen to perform the ceremonial opening face-off, with the help of Koch Fertilizer's Lindsay Kaspick, Lieutenant - Colonel Dave MacIntyre and Chief Warrant Officer Jim Doppler of Canadian Forces Base Shilo.

The pre-game ceremonies will include a Moment of Silence to observe Remembrance Day, which also happens to mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War 1.

The national anthems will be performed by members of the Canadian Military Wives Choir from Shilo.

The Wheat Kings have been hosting home games on Remembrance Day since the days of Bill Derlago, Brian Propp and Brad McCrimmon in the late seventies.

As for Sunday's game, it is game 2 of a season high six game home stand that began Friday night against the Red Deer Rebels.

The Wheat Kings, who will host Medicine Hat and Prince Albert next weekend, kicked off the home stand with a 6-3 victory over the Central Division leading Rebels. Brandon got goals from six different players, including captain Stelio Mattheos and rookie defenceman Neithan Salame.

For Mattheos, who currently leads the club in scoring with seventeen goals and 31 points, the goal was his 100th career goal in the Western Hockey League. Salame's goal meanwhile was his first ever WHL tally.

The Wheat Kings enter Sunday's game with a record of 9-4-3-2 while the Americans will be hoping to bounce back from Friday's 5-1 loss in Regina. That snapped Tri-City's 6-game win streak.

Due to Sunday being Remembrance Day, the Keystone Centre box office will not open until 1pm, so fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets Saturday - at the box office, online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.

Puck drop Sunday is 2:30pm.
