Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Calgary, AB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings snapped a 3-game losing streak Friday night with a 4-0 victory over the Hitmen in Calgary.
Jiri Patera turned aside 37 shots for his fifth shutout of the season and sixth of his Western Hockey League career as the Wheat Kings improved to 26-19-2-2 on the season.
The loss snapped Calgary's modest 4-game win streak.
Patara, who was chosen the Wheat Kings' TELUS Player of the Month for December, moved into a tie with Geoff McIntosh for seventh place on the club's all time list for shutouts and leaves him one shy of Byron Penstock and two behind Jamie Hodson and Glen Hanlon.
Luka Burzan scored twice and set up another to pace the Wheat Kings, who led 2-0 and 3-0 at the period breaks.
Lynden McCallum and Marcus Sekundiak rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who will close out this week's 4-game Alberta road trip Saturday night in Medicine Hat against the Tigers. Defenceman Chad Nychuk meanwhile added a pair of assists in the win.
While the Wheat Kings got back on track, two of the other three playoff bound East Division clubs also hit the win column on Friday.
Prince Albert regained top spot by downing Lethbridge 4-1 and Saskatoon blanked Moose Jaw 3-0.
The Winnipeg ICE meanwhile fell 6-5 in Red Deer.
As a result the Wheat Kings moved to within three points of second place Winnipeg while maintaining a slim two point advantage on the Blades.
Following Saturday night's game the Wheat Kings will return home to host the Tigers on Friday night in the annual RE/MAX Suits up for Organ Donations, in support of the Kidney Foundation.
Brandon's players will be wearing special Hockey Night in Canada theme jerseys, which will be auctioned off before and during the game. As well, the first 3,000 fans in attendance will have a chance to win a special HNIC bobblehead, courtesy of RE/MAX.
Tickets to the game go back on sale at the Keystone Centre box office Saturday morning but because of the annual WinterFest this weekend, fans are encouraged to call (204) 726-3555 or order online at keystonecentre.com.
