CORPUS CHRISTI -- The Corpus Christi Hooks are partnering with Major League Baseball to host a sectional round of Aquafina's Pitch, Hit & Run Skills Competition.
The date: Saturday, May 22, before the Hooks play host to Midland at 7:05. Sectional qualifiers, who advance to Whataburger Field by winning local league contests, begin competing at 10 a.m. There are four age groups: 7- and 8-year-olds, 9- and 10-year-olds, 11- and 12-year-olds, and 13- and 14-year-olds.
Qualifying champions of the Whataburger Field sectional advance to June's MLB team championships at Minute Maid Park, set for Sunday, June 6. Houston's qualifying winners go on to the nationals at MLB's 81st All-Star Game in Anaheim. National finalists receive an all-expenses paid trip to the west coast and participate in a number of All-Star activities and events.
In the Hooks service area, Padre Little League (March 27), Oil Belt Little League (March 6) and Rockport's Coastal Bend Pony League (April 10), National Little League (March 27) and Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department (March 27) have planned local contests. The Boys and Girls Club of Corpus Christi, Universal Little League and Laguna Little League are also on board.
Other interested leagues should contact Bryan Mayhood of the Hooks at 361-561-4704. Mayhood is a resource to assist leagues in staging their local competitions.
"We want as many young athletes as possible to participate in this program. It will be a great experience for them," Mayhood said. "Our goal is to include baseball and softball players from throughout South Texas. That means Alice, Beeville, Edinburg, Hebbronville, Falfurrias, George West, Kingsville, Mathis, Raymondville, Refugio, Sinton, Three Rivers... all of those communities and more."
Select baseball and softball players without a league affiliation, as well as athletes not currently involved in "league ball," are encouraged to sign up for their local competition with a nearby league or organization.
"Anyone who meets the age requirement is eligible," Mayhood explained. "All they have to do is call me for details."
Age is as of July 17, 2010.
