Whalers Lead Series 1-0 After 6-5 Victory

The PlymouthWhalers skated to a 6-5 victory over the Kitchener Rangers in game oneof the Western Conference quarter finals at The Aud.

Matt Tipoff opened scoring in the game just 33-seconds in to the first period. Tipoff sent a shot over the shoulder of Whalers netminder Scott Wedgewood to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Plymouth's Tyler Brown buried a cross crease pass from Robbie Czarnik to tie the game 1-1 by the 12:07 mark. The remainder of the period was scoreless.

The Whalers' Beau Schmitz scored on a shot from the right point at 6:30 of the second to put Plymouth up 2-1. Tipoff scored his second goal of the evening at 8:58, a power play marker that tied the game at 2-2. The Whalers recovered their one goal lead after Stefan Noesen backhanded his first playoff goal at 9:54. Michael Catenacci took a shot that went in off a Plymouth skate at 14:22 to even the score at 3-3. Garrett Meurs answered back on a Whalers give and go to make it 4-3 by 15:40. Just over a minute later, Gabriel Landeskog scored off a centering pass from Catenacci to tie the game 4-4.

Dario Trutmann scored the go-ahead goal for Plymouth at 5:21 of the third period to make it 5-4. Brown scored his second of the night to increase the Whalers lead 6-4. Landeskog brought the Rangers within one goal at the 12:21 mark. In the end the Rangers were unable to surpass the Whalers.

The Rangers travel to Plymouth on Saturday, March 26th for game two of the Western Conference Quarter Finals. Game time is 7:05pm.They will return to The Aud on Monday, March 28th for game three at 7:00pm.
