Whalen Wins Third Straight

Rallying from a 2-0 deficit the Calgary Vipers (11-10) defeated the Lake County Fielders (14-7) 5-2 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta to spilt a double-header featuring two seven inning games. Falling behind after two and a half innings Calgary scored three times in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good while adding two insurance runs in the fifth frame. Stephen Whalen (3-1) won his third consecutive start with five innings while giving up one earned run, not walking anyone, and tossing only 60 pitches. Out of the bullpen Chris Bodishbaugh threw a scoreless inning with three strikeouts while Claudio Galva (5) recorded the save with a perfect ninth inning including two strikeouts. Michael Moore (1-2) took the loss by allowing five runs in four and two-third innings.

C.J. Ziegler launched a solo home run in the top of the second inning to give Lake County a 1-0 lead.

The Fielders doubled their lead to 2-0 in the third frame when Joe Dempsey reached on a fielding error, Michael Moore bunted for a base hit, and Rex Rundgren drove in one with a single.

Calgary responded in the bottom of the inning as Aaron Dunsmore singled, Jeff Giacomini walked, Stephen Whalen laid down a sacrifice bunt, Jonny Kaplan walked to load the base, Wilver Perez drove in two with a single, and Andy Jenkins collected a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 lead.

The Vipers added to the lead in the fifth frame when Bryan Burke walked on a ten pitch at-bat, Kaplan singled, Burke scored on a throwing error, and Drew Miller drove in a run with a base hit for a 5-2 advantage.

The Vipers now hit the road for seven games in five days in Chico against the Outlaws starting on Saturday June 18th at 7:30.

Calgary will return home on Thursday June 23rd at 7:05 to take on the Strong Warriors of Maui.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
