Ayala Absorbs First Loss

Giving up 15 runs over four innings the Calgary Vipers (10-10) were throttled 15-4 by the Lake County Fielders (14-6) at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta in the first half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games. Absorbing his first loss since 2009 Manny Ayala (3-1) gave up 11 runs in three innings of work before having to leave the game due to injury. Calgary scored twice in the first inning and led 3-2 after two innings before giving up 12 unanswered runs in three straight innings where the Fielder's sent nine batters to the plate in each frame. Vince Bongiovanni (2-0) registered the win with a 96 miles per hour fastball and six innings pitched with three earned runs allowed.

Calgary took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Jonny Kaplan singled, stole second base, Wilver Perez tripled for a run batted in and later scored on a passed ball.

Lake County quickly tied the game at 2-2 in the next half inning when with two outs Patrick Brooks walked and Matthew Redding Jr. launched his first home run of the season.

The Vipers took back the lead in the bottom of the frame as Jimmy Rohan singled, Louie Templeton laid down a bunt for a base hit, Bryan Burke loaded the bases, and Rohan scored when a double-play was hit into for a 3-2 advantage.

The Fielders answered in the third frame when Rex Rundgren singled and Argelis Nunez homered to take the lead. C.J. Ziegler followed with a walk, Brandon Newton and Matt Mansilla singled to load the bases, and with two outs Redding Jr. cleared the bases with a double for a 7-3 advantage.

Lake County put up a second consecutive five-run inning in the fourth as Quentin Luquette and Rundgren singled, Nunez walked to load the bases, Ziegler walked for a RBI, Newton collected a two-run double, Mansilla grounded out for a RBI, and Redding Jr. double home two for a 12-3 lead.

The scoring continued in the fifth when the Fielders' Rundgren and Nunez singled, Newton drove in a run with a base hit, Mansilla was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Nunez scored on a fielding error, and Redding Jr. collected a RBI single for a 15-3 advantage.

Calgary got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Andy Jenkins doubled and Drew Miller singled for a RBI and a 15-4 score.

Game 2 of this double-header will take place at 6:30.

The Vipers now hit the road for seven games in five days in Chico against the Outlaws starting on Saturday June 18th at 7:30.

Calgary will return home on Thursday June 23rd at 7:05 to take on the Strong Warriors of Maui.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
