Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Patrick Wey is on the cusp of becoming the second former Waterloo Black Hawk to make his NHL debut in 2013/14 after his recall by the Washington Capitals on Thursday.

After completing his college career at Boston College last spring, Wey was signed by Washington. This fall, he was assigned first to the Reading Royals in the ECHL, then promoted to the Hershey Bears of the AHL. In 15 combined games with the two Capitals affiliates, the Pittsburgh native recorded a goal, five assists, and a +6 plus/minus rating. The Capitals selected Wey during the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Draft following his second season in Waterloo.

Addressing the media after practice in Washington this morning, Wey was predictably enthusiastic about the call-up.

"I'm definitely excited to be back.I've gotten to taste a little bit of every league. It's great to be up here and have this opportunity," he said.

Wey could play in his first National Hockey League game on Saturday. If he is in the lineup for the Capitals' next matchup, he will find himself facing the Nashville Predators, with former Waterloo teammate Craig Smith on the opposite bench. Smith was also selected during the 2009 Draft.

As a 16-year-old USHL rookie during 2007/08, Wey played in 35 games for the Black Hawks, scoring a goal and five assists. The next year, he was +22 during 58 games, finishing second among Waterloo defensemen with 34 points (seven goals, 27 assists). At Boston College, Wey was a member of two NCAA National Championship teams in 2010 and 2012. Over 133 college appearances, he had four goals and 29 assists.

In early November, defenseman Chad Billins - another of Wey's former Waterloo teammates - appeared in his first NHL game for the Calgary Flames. Other Hawks in the NHL this season include Smith, Andrew Alberts (Vancouver Canucks), J.T. Brown (Tampa Bay Lightning), and Joe Pavelski (San Jose Sharks).

Wey is on the verge of becoming the 15th former Black Hawk to reach hockey's highest level, and the fourth to appear for the Capitals. The others are twin brothers Chris Ferraro and Peter Ferraro, plus defenseman John Gruden. The Capitals will equal two other franchises as the most prolific destination for Waterloo alumni; four different Hawks have also previously played for the Boston Bruins and the New York Islanders.
