
Wetzel Homers Twice, Pelicans Rout RiverDogs 14-4

On a night where the visiting offense didn't stop, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Charleston RiverDogs 14-4 in the second game of the series. With their 16th double-digit run performance of the season, the Pelicans improved to 60-29 with a 13-10 second-half record. Charleston dropped to 57-31 and 11-11 in the second half.
The Pelicans lineup collected 15 hits with Jacob Wetzel (3-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI, BB) leading the group with a two-run and three-run home run. Kevin Alcantara (4-4, 3B, RBI, BB) collected four hits for the second time this year. Ezequiel Pagan (3-4, 2B, RBI, 2 BB) and Josue Huma (2-4, 2 BB) both posted multi-hit games in the offensive explosion.
Myrtle Beach used just three pitchers with Richard Gallardo (6-6) earning the win with three earned runs off four hits and a walk across five innings with five strikeouts. Johzan Oquendo tossed the middle three innings with an earned run sacrifice off two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Charleston received production from the back of their lineup as Logan Allen (2-3, HR, 2B, RBI, BB) hit a solo home run in the third inning and Jelfry Marte (2-4, 2B, RBI) logged a multi-hit performance with an RBI.
Five pitchers were used by the RiverDogs with starter Ben Peoples (3-4) taking the loss. Peoples threw the first 1 2/3 innings with three earned runs off five hits while striking out two. Alex Ayala Jr. gave up most of the runs with six earned through his 2 2/3 innings.
A three-run second inning kicked things off for Myrtle Beach. With runners on first and second, Wetzel lined a single to right to score the game's first run. Pagan scored from third base on a wild pitch and Scott McKeon later knocked Wetzel in from second on a two-out single to give the Pelicans a 3-0 lead.
Allen led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left field to make it a 3-1 Pelicans lead.
Ayala Jr. came into the game in the top of the fourth and the Pelicans immediately put the pressure on. With runners on the corners, James Triantos hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Huma. Pagan came up with runners on first and second and grounded a single to right that scored another run. Alcantara scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 6-1 Pelicans through the top of the fourth.
Another run came in the fifth as the Birds led off with two walks. Runners moved to the corners after a forceout and Malcom Quintero scored on a balk by Ayala Jr. with Huma at the plate to go up 7-1.
Charleston got two runs back in the bottom half as Allen doubled with one out and later scored on Marte's RBI single to right field. Marte moved to third on a single and came home with a Shane Sasaki sacrifice fly to center field as the Pelicans led 7-3 after five innings.
Wetzel's first home run came in the Birds' half of the sixth with Pagan on second. Wetzel hit a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right field for his sixth of the season as Myrtle Beach led 9-3.
Triantos would bring home another run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh to push the Pelicans into double digits.
The RiverDogs scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth on a Ryan Spikes RBI single to center that scored Sasaki from second base.
Already up 10-4, the Pelicans packed on four runs in the top of the ninth. With runners on the corners, Alcantara lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Huma. Pagan drew a walk to put two runners on and Wetzel homered again on a line drive to right field for a three-run shot to extend the Pelicans' lead to 14-4.
Myrtle Beach and Charleston will battle for the series victory on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m.
