Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
A night after tallying 14 runs, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans couldn't come up with any in a 2-0 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs on Sunday night. With the loss, the Pelicans dropped their second series of the season with their second loss of the three-game set. Their record dropped to 60-30 and 13-11 in the second half. Charleston improved to 58-31 and 12-11 in the second half. Sunday's shutout loss was the first time Myrtle Beach has been shut out since April 13th against the Augusta GreenJackets.
It was a quiet night for the Pelicans' bats as the lineup collected just three hits. Juan Mora (1-3, BB), Jacob Wetzel (1-3), and Felix Stevens (1-3) accounted for all the hits for Myrtle Beach. The Birds left five runners on and went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
Despite logging a quality start, Tyler Santana (7-1) took his first loss of the season with two runs, one earned in his six innings while allowing just three hits and a walk, and five strikeouts.
Charleston racked up just four hits in the game with the lone RBI going to Nick Schnell (1-3, 2B, RBI) on a double in the fourth inning. Alejandro Pie (1-3, 2B) also hit a double in the win.
Sunday's starter Daiveyon Whittle (1-4) earned the win with five shutout innings and just two hits allowed while striking out three. Kamron Fields closed the game and got the save with two strikeouts in the final frame.
Both RiverDogs runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out and a runner on first, Schnell hit a double to left field to score Bobby Seymour. Schnell moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball by Pelicans' catcher Ethan Hearn to go up 2-0.
The Pelicans had a chance to get back in the game in the top of the ninth. Mora led off the inning with a walk and stole second base following the first out. The following two batters struck out to end the game.
Myrtle Beach will continue their road trip by heading to Augusta to take on the GreenJackets in a six-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday.
