Westmoreland and Celek Lead Blowfish to Victory

Adam Westmoreland pitched seven shutout innings and Brison Celek went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, as the Columbia Blowfish (6-12; 15-31) defeated the Morehead City Marlins (10-8; 24-22) 9-2 Friday night at Capital City Stadium.

Westmoreland (1-1) picked up his first win as a Blowfish pitcher, giving up only five hits and striking out eight batters in seven innings.

The Blowfish offense gave Westmoreland the lead in the second inning. Celek scored on a wild pitch by Marlins' starting pitcher Dario Santangelo. Later in the inning, Nick Abrahamson drove in Carlos Santana on a RBI single, giving the Blowfish a 2-0 lead.

Columbia added two more runs in the bottom of the third on a RBI single by Celek and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Reggie Weatherford off Santangelo, pushing the lead to 4-0. Santangelo (3-5) gave up four runs on seven hits through five innings.

The Blowfish scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. RBI singles by Celek and Greg Harrison, driving in Dedric Mingo and Tyler Jackson, to give the Blowfish a 6-0 lead.

The offense continued to roll in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs off Marlins' relievers Sam Cooke and Jim Foster. Mingo and Zach Smith each had a RBI double, pushing the Blowfish lead to 9-0.

Jake Long relieved Westmoreland in the eighth inning, retiring the Marlins in order. Long struggled in the top of the ninth inning, giving up two runs. Zach Stephens and Danny Diekroeger each picked up a RBI for Morehead City before Long got the final out.

The Blowfish travel to Fayetteville, N.C. to play the SwampDogs on Saturday. The Marlins travel to Florence, S.C. to face the RedWolves tomorrow.
