Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs rallied from an early deficit but ultimately succumbed to the Wilmington Sharks, 6-5, at Buck Hardee Field on Friday night.
Sharks third baseman Jake Mayers hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie for what would prove to be the decisive run off of SwampDogs reliever Cory Kent (5-1). Kent suffered his first defeat as a result, allowing _ hits in two innings of work and the lone earned run.
Fayetteville (27-18, 10-7) trailed 5-1 heading to the top of the sixth inning and had two outs before the rally began with a single from Dillon Checkal. Cody Hudson then beat out a groundball that was ruled an error, and Checkal scored on the error by Mayers. Dylan Brown and Eric Grabe both followed with singles before John Hogan tied the game with a two-run double to chase Wilmington starter Mat Batts.
Chris Dula (1-1) recorded the final out of the sixth and pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the victory. Ross Whitley recorded the final three outs in the ninth to earn his seventh save.
Grabe finished his night at 4-for-5, extending his all-time CPL hits record to 170 career base hits. Joe Vaskas went 2-for-5, and Checkal also delivered two hits in a losing effort. The SwampDogs stranded 12 base runners on the night, including one in every inning until the ninth.
Wilmington (23-20, 10-5) moved a full game in front of the SwampDogs in the second half CPL South standings. It's the first time the Sharks have beaten the SwampDogs at home this season.
The SwampDogs return home for two games against the Columbia Blowfish. Saturday is Miller Motte College Night, and the first 500 fans through the gates will receive a commemorative team photo, courtesy of Miller Motte. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
