Forest City Owls News Release
ASHEBORO, N.C. - The Asheboro Copperheads defeated the Forest City Owls, 3-1, Friday night at McCrary Park. The Owls fall to 9-8 in the second half and 25-19 overall, while the Copperheads improve to 7-10 in the second half and 23-21 overall.
Forest City handed the ball to Nick Lomascolo (Catawba). Lomascolo tossed eight innings, surrendering three runs on three hits and striking out three batters. Lomascolo's seven walks are the most issued by an Owls pitcher this season. Asheboro countered with Josh White (Limestone), who threw five innings of one-run ball while giving up four hits, striking out two batters and walking one. Lomascolo was hit with the loss, while Asheboro reliever Christian MacDonald (UNC Wilmington) earned the victory.
The Owls drew first blood in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Reed Harper hit a sacrifice fly to right, sending Michael Basil (Indiana) home. Asheboro answered in the bottom of the frame when Jacob Wilson (Memphis) sent a sacrifice fly of his own to left that plated Sam Picchiotti (Wright State). The scoreboard read 1-1 after three innings.
Forest City experienced a scare in the top of the sixth inning. During an inning-ending double play, Axel Johnson (TCU) suffered an injury while attempting to slide into second base. Johnson had to be carried off the field by his coaches, unable to put any weight on his left leg. Justin Britt (Southeastern CC) took Johnson's place in right field.
Asheboro's Mike McCarthy broke the deadlock in explosive fashion in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Copperheads' first baseman launched a two-run homer over the right-center wall, putting the home team ahead 3-1 after eight frames. Copperheads closer Corey Deighan pitched a perfect ninth to rack up his fifth save of the summer.
The Owls return to McNair Field tomorrow night, where they will play host to the Thomasville Hi-Toms. First pitch is set for 7:30 PM.
