West Virginia Loses Series Opener to Frederick Keys

August 3, 2021 - Major League Baseball Draft League (MLBDL) - West Virginia Black Bears News Release

GRANVILLE, W.Va. - The West Virginia Black Bears dropped the first game of a three-game series against the Frederick Keys, 8-2, Tuesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. In a poor offensive showing, the Bears put up three hits on the night compared to the Keys' nine and failed to reach base in three of the seven innings played. With the loss, the Black Bears continue a three-game losing streak at home that began in July against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

Frederick took an early lead in the top of the first inning with a 2-run homer, while adding to their lead in the third and fourth innings on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, respectively. In the bottom of the fourth, West Virginia finally got their first hit of the evening when 3B Jesse Pierce dropped a single into shallow center field, but two consecutive outs kept the Black Bears scoreless heading into the fifth inning.

After struggling offensively for four innings, West Virginia managed to plate runners in the bottom of the fifth. A double from RF Amari Bartee put Bears in scoring position, and he scored on a wild pitch to give West Virginia its first run of the game. Following the strikeout of C Luis Navarro, 1B Grant Hussey smashed a ball deep into right field for his eighth home run of the season, cutting the deficit to two runs. West Virginia struck out the next at-bat and headed into the sixth inning down 4-2.

Unfortunately for the Bears, any hope of a comeback was extinguished in the seventh inning when the Keys scored four runs off RHP Daniel Killingsworth. Despite throwing two scoreless innings prior to the seventh, Killingsworth allowed three earned runs in consecutive at-bats. West Virginia ended the game after both Bartee and Breydon Daniel struck out swinging.

West Virginia Black Bears will continue their final six-game home stand tomorrow night against the Frederick Keys in game two of the series. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. For more information, please visit
