GRANVILLE, W.Va. - After taking game one, West Virginia dropped the second game of the series against the Frederick Keys, 6-9, on Wednesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. Both teams kept the game close until the fifth inning when errors and walks from the Black Bears allowed the Keys to score six runs. Despite out-hitting the Keys 12-to-9, the team could not plate enough runners to overcome the deficit. With this loss, the Black Bears remain 0.5 game back behind the first-place Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the MLB Draft League.

West Virginia started the game strong, scoring the first run of the game on a single to right field by LF Ryan McCoy that scored SS Freylin Minyety. After a run from the Keys to tie in the second inning, West Virginia took the lead again in the bottom of the inning. A double from Minyety and a sacrifice out from McCoy brought Minyety across the plate for the second time.

The back-to-back lead changes continued into the fourth when RF Grant Hussey reached second base off errors, followed by a ground single from DH Eli Hammill which gave the Black Bears a one score lead (3-2) heading into the fifth inning.

The top of the fifth inning ended the consecutive lead changes, when Frederick scored six runs off RHP J.P. Massey. Another comeback looked possible for the Black Bears, when Mitchell scored on a RBI single from McCoy. A dropped ball from the Key's catcher allowed McCoy to get home safely and cut the lead to 5-8.

However, Fredrick added an insurance run in the seventh inning to quiet the Black Bears dugout. The Black Bears decreased the lead to three runs again when a bases loaded walk allowed Hammill to earn the Black Bears' sixth run of the game. But West Virginia could not complete the comeback for the second night in a row, and the Keys earned their fifth win of the season.

LHP Peyton Alford began the night in his first start and his fifth appearance for the Black Bears, allowing only three hits with four strikeouts before leaving the game in the fourth inning.

West Virginia looks to win the series tomorrow night at home, before traveling to Mahoning Valley this weekend. Tomorrow's match up will begin at 6:35 p.m. with fireworks sponsored by WVU Medicine beginning 30-minutes post-game. For more information, please visit www.WestVirginiaBlackBears.com.
