West Virginia Defeats Williamsport 9-1

GRANVILLE, W.Va. - Black Bears' starter LHP Cam Vieaux earned his first win of the year, leading West Virginia to a 9-1 win over Williamsport on Sunday afternoon from Monongalia County Ballpark. The Michigan State product earned his first win of the year tossing six innings, allowing one earned run on six hits while fanning five batters through six innings.

West Virginia found success off of Williamsport starter LHP Ranger Suarez in the early going as a two RBI single off the bat LF Ty Moore gave the Black Bears a 2-0 lead. But, the Crosscutters would respond in the fifth as DH Emmanuel Garcia hit an RBI triple to cut Williamsport's deficit in half, 2-1. In the bottom of the frame, West Virginia would pull away as a solo home run from C Chris Harvey over the left field wall, an RBI single off the bat of DH Kevin Mahala and a double steal allowed SS Stephen Alemais to cross the plate, making the score 5-1.

Two innings later, 2B Nick King, who tripled, came across to score on an RBI groundout from Alemais providing the Black Bears with a 6-1 lead. In the seventh, West Virginia tallied three more runs as 3B Will Craig extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a double. A Crosscutters' error, and a two RBI single from 1B Albert Baur put the Black Bears ahead, 9-1.

Reliever RHP Scooter Hightower entered for Vieaux in the seventh and struck out three batters over two scoreless innings as reliever RHP Billy Roth retired the side in the ninth. For the Crosscutters, LF Jesus Alastre and Garcia had two hits each as Suarez took his first loss of the year, allowing five earned runs on eight hits over five innings. Mahala, Baur, King and Alemais had two hits apiece as the Black Bears outhit Williamsport 12-7.

West Virginia (22-27) and Williamsport (28-21) will meet in the series finale tomorrow night at 7:05 PM from Monongalia County Ballpark on Ladies Night.
