Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

FISHKILL, NY - Though they were sloppy at times and found themselves down late, the Renegades got off the deck to score one in the eighth and another in the ninth to defeat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 3-2 at Dutchess Stadium Sunday evening. It was the first walk-off victory for Hudson Valley this season.

The Renegades got on the board in the third inning as designated hitter Angel Perez led off the inning with a triple off the wall in left-centerfield. After Bill Pujols was hit with a pitch, leftfielder Jake Fraley laced a single to center to score Perez and give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.

Hudson Valley still had runners at the corners with none out after the RBI single. However, Fraley was thrown out trying to steal and Scrappers starter Tanner Tully got centerfielder Garrett Whitley to strikeout and rightfielder Ryan Boldt to fly out to end the inning and keep the score 1-0.

Things stayed that way until the eighth when some sloppy defense from the Renegades allowed the Scrappers to take the lead. Reliever Deivy Mendez gave up back-to-back walks to centerfielder Gabriel Mejia and rightfielder Todd Isaacs to start the inning. Leftfielder Andrew Calica laid down a sacrifice bunt to Mendez who threw to first. The first baseman Jose Rojas missed the throw allowing Mejia to score from second and Isaacs to go to third. The throw to the plate on the play got away from Renegades catcher Chris Betts, which allowed Calica to go to second. Rojas and Betts were charged with errors on the play and game was tied at one.

After that, Mendez got a ground out but then uncorked a wild pitch to the next hitter, which allowed Isaacs to score from third and give the Scrappers a 2-1 lead. Calica went to third on the play, however Mendez settled down and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and keep the score 2-1.

The Renegades surged back in the eighth as Fraley tripled to right-centerfield to lead off the inning. After a lineout, Boldt hit a routine grounder to the second baseman Erlin Cerda who was about to throw home with Fraley charging to the plate. However, Cerda dropped the ball giving Fraley time to score and the Scrappers infielder tried to throw to first to retire Boldt. The throw was wide of the bag and Boldt reached on the throwing error. As the throw got away, Boldt tried to go to second but Mahoning Valley first baseman Nate Winfrey picked up the errant throw and threw to second to retire Boldt and keep the game tied at two.

Reliever Brandon Lawson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, setting the stage for the Renegades' heroics in the bottom-half. Second-baseman Miles Mastrobuoni led off with a double down the rightfield line, then moved to third on a wild pitch. Rojas followed and popped out for the first out of the inning. Catcher Chris Betts then came to the plate and on a 2-2 pitch laced the ball into rightfield where Chris Isaacs made the catch. Mastrobuoni tagged at third and raced to the plate just beating the throw to home from Isaacs with a head-first slide giving the Renegades the 3-2 win.

Lawson (4-1) got the win after striking out one in the 1-2-3 ninth. The exciting finish overshadowed another great pitching performance from Hudson Valley starter Travis Ott who allowed only three hits and struck out six over six innings to incredibly lower his ERA to 0.22.

Reliever Ping-Hsueh Chen (1-2) suffered the loss for Mahoning Valley as he allowed two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. Scrappers starter Tanner Tully tossed five innings of three-hit baseball while allowing one run.

Hudson Valley had seven hits and everyone with a base-knock had multiple hits. Fraley went 2-4 with a triple, run scored and RBI. Perez went 3-3 with a triple, two singles and a stolen base, while Mastrobuoni went 2-4 with a double and the game-winning run.

Mahoning Valley had only four hits including a 2-4 performance by Mejia who had two singles, a walk and a run scored.

The Renegades wrap-up their series and homestand with the Scrappers on Monday with a 7:05 start. Right-hander Adrian Navas (2-2, 1.63 ERA) will go to the hill for Hudson Valley against southpaw Juan Hillman (3-1, 2.55 ERA) for Mahoning Valley.
